Project story
Heater shutting off in a San Antonio cold snap
The burners lit and went out within seconds. A coated flame sensor was the cause.
-
The problem
On the first cold night of the year the furnace started, ran for a few seconds, shut off and tried again, over and over.
-
What we found
The burners lit normally, but the flame sensor was not confirming the flame, so the control shut the gas off each time. The sensor rod was coated. Venting and gas pressure checked out, and the filter was dirty.
-
The options
Clean the flame sensor and change the filter, or replace the sensor if it was damaged. It cleaned up well, so replacement was not needed.
-
What was done
The sensor was cleaned, the filter replaced, and the furnace was run through several full heating cycles while the safety controls were checked.
-
The outcome
The furnace runs full cycles again. The homeowner was shown the filter and how often to check it.
